So often, Mobile video games are marketed so poorly. 9 times out of 10, the mobile game ads online are animations made to look revolutionary. These ads are also made to look like gameplay instead of cinematics. Then, when you check it out on the App Store, it looks nothing like what you see in the Ad. False marketing is everywhere, and for once this is the case with FNAF.
I am totally cool with Cinematic trailers as long as the companies show some gameplay in motion sometime down the line. This game looked like revolutionary AR, but when you play the game it is very underwhelming. Instead of animatronics walking around, it's just static. I understand that the technology may not be here yet to do what was in the trailers, but this gameplay is super underwhelming. The animatronics do show up, but it is for very little time.
The animatronics don't feel like they are there, because when they show up they are just hovering over stuff. We don't have the technology yet to distinguish the table from the floor apparently. Personally, this might be my least favorite gameplay for a FNAF game, but it has a tough fight to fight for that spot with FNAF 3. I am so disappointed that this game was developed so early in the life of AR, because a FNAF game with smart AR would be really cool. We just won't be there for a long time though.
I think that the real world map game trend should die, but FNAF AR uses this in a unique way. For once, you don't have to leave the comfort of your own home and risk dying. The animatronics come to you. This makes everything so much better and sets it apart from other map games. FNAF AR also uses the AR camera in a better way than all of the other map games. FNAF AR's camera gameplay sucks, but it sucks less than the camera gameplay of other map games. I like that FNAF AR innovates with this gameplay, even if it still isn't good.
Another good thing about this game is the story. There isn't a lot of story here, but at least there is lore being added. I may hate this game, but I am interested in the William Afton Cult lore that FNAF VR started. I think it is a great direction to take the story in, since I am pretty much done with the whole killed kids become souls of animatronics thing. Pizzeria Simulator was the perfect bow tied to that story to close it up. It should not continue.
The last thing I admire about this game is how different it is from other FNAF games. This and Sister Location are the only two FNAF games that truly transcend the genre that FNAF created. This game opens up the flood gates to actually good FNAF AR games in the future with actually good AR technology. I want to see a FNAF game where you get the game to scan your house and be able to tell where the doors are. This would create a truly AR FNAF experience.
